This is our third day of volunteer work at Gampela. Reg, Terry and the electrical team continued on their project. Andrew and Braeden began the Excel computer training and reported that the practice Excel spreadsheet they were working on showed their income was only one third of their expenses. They felt the training went very well.
Mary, Marianne and I continued with the medical checks for the school age children. Eye exams were done for all the older children. It was determined that the children were generally very healthy and the only issue left for follow up was dental work. Mary also spent additional time on a few children that had a build up of wax in their ears.
Deb has keen organizational skills that were put to the task of sorting through various containers and assorted items in one of their storage rooms with a second one to be tackled tomorrow.
Afterward the tradition was followed of sharing lunch with our Fulani host, Soumayila. Mary suggested urine testing for any that were interested to check protein, sugar and PH levels. David discussed this with Soumayila, and he said, yes, he would like that done.
We had an early supper and went to another of SIM's ministries, the ESL program (English as a Second Language). Adult students from all walks of life pay a small course fee and participate in English classes. The fee helps to pay for the text books, and all the teachers work on a volunteer basis. The classes are divided into seven different levels with seven being the most advanced students. Terry and I joined the Level 5 class which had eight students attending, and the other team members joined various other classes. We gave an introduction about ourselves and they asked us questions. We enjoyed the dialogue and the lesson that even taught Terry a few things he didn't know about nouns and adjectives.
The English portion of the class is followed by a short bible study. The students gave us a summary of the story of Moses that they have been studying. It was very interesting to hear their perspective and have the story told in simple terms. The team enjoyed the classes and meeting the students so much that we decided we wanted to go to the next class on Monday.
