November 7

Today was more of a laid-back day off. The team went out in the morning to get groceries at two different markets which allowed us to see different areas of the city.

The traffic here is quite an experience in itself. Yes there are some cars, but they are greatly outnumbered by mini-motorcycles, scooters, bicycles and donkeys. They are operated by all types of people - men, women in dresses and quite young people. There also doesn't seem to be any rules of the road. They are everywhere and come across intersections in even the slightest gap.

Mommy, where's my helmet?

In the latter part of the afternoon, the men went out to Gampela to plan for the work for the rest of the week while we stayed back at the compound.

We are very much being spoiled by Dave and Marianne with the wonderful meals that they have been preparing for us (mostly Canadian). Tonight we were treated to a home-made African meal by Anna and her nephew Elijah. One of our team members, Mary, lived in Burkina for the first 15 years of her life. Her family and Anna's family have been close friends all of their lives. Anna's Dad was the first Christian in south-eastern Burkina. Anna is one of the friendliest Africans we have met since we have been here, and Elijah is her brilliant young 15-year old nephew who can also converse with us in English.
